When I was young there was an abundance of forests and wild animals, especially water birds, and I was always very attached to these resources from a very young age. When I grew older, those resources dramatically declined, and some no longer even exist in my village. Loss of habitats, illegal land clearing for agriculture, hunting for food and illegal wildlife trade are all threatening factors. Feeling regret for the loss of those resources and the passion I have for them both inspired me to choose forestry as a major at university after I finished high school. I was hoping that after I graduated, I would be able to take part in protecting natural resources that are being threatened by human activities.
With all the passion I have, I tried to do voluntary work on any projects that protect our natural resources, even before I graduated. Through this effort, I was selected to work in a local organization engaged in wildlife conservation by providing outreach and education to school children. The project would take children to the Tamao Zoo every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to introduce them to the threatened and endangered species, and the importance of wildlife conservation and protection.
After I graduated, I took another step to achieve my top goal that I had since I was in my high school years. This was to directly work on wildlife protection and conservation in natural protected areas by joining an international organization that works on the conservation of threatened and endangered birds. These birds migrate from other countries and live in Cambodia temporarily for breeding. Today I work directly on a program that observes and monitors wildlife, especially significant birds that are heavily threatened and endangered, in the Ramsar site at Prek Toal, which is a core Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve. I provide education and outreach activities to local communities, search for bird nests, provide training to rangers on how to identify and collect data about the birds’ arrival and breeding, collect data on bird nest boundaries, and set patrol stations. I also make monthly plans for rangers to patrol bird nests.
I am very happy with my achievements working in bird conservation because this work can help to protect the wildlife of my country, especially Globally Endangered, Threatened and Near Threatened bird species. I am very proud of my work because all of these wildlife resources are very important for local communities that depend on them for their daily lives by getting additional income from eco-tourism, such as by providing boat services, guiding, home stays, community restaurants and souvenirs. I am very glad to see the sustainable use of natural resources by local communities and that they are happy to participate in protecting all those resources. To succeed in conservation work, we need all the local communities who live around conservation areas and all relevant stakeholders to join us in protecting the area through their daily activities and behavior. I hope to teach my own son to love birds and to do bird watching as a hobby, and also treat natural resources well.

កាលនៅក្មេងៗនៅស្រុកកំណើតរបស់ខ្ញុំ សំបូរធនធានព្រៃឈើ និងសត្វព្រៃច្រើន ជាពិសេសសត្វស្លាបទឹក ហើយទាំងអស់នេះជាធនធានដែលខ្ញុំតែងតែស្រលាញ់ចូលចិត្តតាំងពីកាលនៅក្មេង លុះដល់ធំដឹងក្តីឡើងធនធានទាំងនោះត្រូវបានថយចុះ ហើយមួយចំនួនទៀតមិនមានវត្តមាននៅស្រុកកំណើតរបស់ខ្ញុំដូចមុនទៀតឡើយ ដោយសារកក្តាគំរាមកំហែងផ្សេងៗដូចជា ការបាត់បង់ទីជម្រក ដោយសាការទន្រ្ទានដីដើម្បីពង្រីកផ្ទៃដីកសិកម្ម ការប្រម៉ាញ់សត្វព្រៃធ្វើចំណីអារហា និងការជួញដូរសត្វព្រៃ។
ដោយមានការសោកស្តាយនូវធនធានដែលបាត់បង់ និងស្រលាញ់ធនធានទាំងនោះ បន្ទាប់ពីបញ្ចប់មធ្យមសិក្សា ខ្ញុំបាទបានជ្រើសរើសការសិក្សាលើវិស័យព្រៃឈើ ដើម្បីបន្តការសិក្សានៅឧត្តមសិក្សា ដែលខ្ញុំរំពឹងថានៅក្រោយបញ្ចប់ការសិក្សា ខ្ញុំនឹងអាចចូលរួមចំណែក ថែរក្សាការពារធនធានធម្មជាតិដែលកំពុងប្រ ឈមនឹងការគម្រាមកំហែងទាំងនោះ។ ដោយការស្រលាញ់ចូលចិត្តនូវធនធានធម្មជាតិ និងសោកស្តាយនូវធនធានដែលបានបាត់បង់នៅស្រុកកំណើត ទោះបីជាមិនទាន់បញ្ចប់ការសិក្សានៅឧត្តមសិក្សា ខ្ញុំតែងតែព្យា យាមស្វែងរកការងារស្ម័គ្រចិត ដែលទាក់ទងនឹងការការពារ និងអភិរក្សធនធានធម្មជាតិ។ តាមរយៈការព្យា យាមនេះ ទីបំផុតខ្ញុំបាទត្រូវបានជ្រើសរើសធ្វើការងារស្ម័គ្រចិត្តនៅអង្គការក្នុងស្រុកមួយ ដែលអង្គការនេះជាអង្គការធ្វើការងារអភិរក្សសត្វព្រៃ តាមរយៈកម្មវិធីអប់រំផ្សព្វផ្សាយដល់កុមារតាមសាលា ស្តីពីការអភិរក្សសត្វព្រៃដោយនាំកុមារទាំងនោះទៅសួនសត្វភ្មំតាម៉ៅ រៀងរាល់ថ្ងៃសុក្រ សៅរ៍ និងអាទិត្យ ដើម្បីណែនាំនិងផ្សព្វផ្សាយអំពីប្រភេទសត្វ ដែលទទួលរងការគម្រាមកំហែង និងជិតផុតពូជលើពិភពលោក និងសារៈសំខាន់នៃការអភិរក្សសត្វព្រៃទាំងនោះ។
ក្រោយពីការបញ្ចប់ការសិក្សានៅឧត្តមសិក្សា ខ្ញុំក៏បានឈានមួយជំហ៊ានទៀត ដែលជាគោលបំណងចម្បងតាំងពីបញ្ចប់នៅមធ្យមសិក្សាគឺ ការធ្វើការងារការពារ និងអភិរក្សសត្វព្រៃដោយផ្ទាល់ នៅតំបន់ការពារធម្មជាតិ តាមរយៈការចូលធ្វើការជាមួយអង្គការអន្តរជាតិមួយ ដោយធ្វើកិច្ចការអភិរក្សប្រភេទសត្វស្លាបដែលជាប្រភេទទទួលរងនូវការគម្រាមកំហែង និងជិតផុតពូជលើពិភពលោក ដែលមករស់នៅបណ្តោះអាសន្ន អចិន្ត្រៃ និងបន្តពូជនៅប្រទេសកម្ពុជា។ បច្ចុប្បន្នខ្ញុំបានធ្វើការដោយផ្ទាល់លើកម្មវិធីអង្កេត និងពិនិត្យតាមដានសត្វព្រៃ ជាពិសេសសត្វសា្លបទឹកសំខាន់ៗ ដែលជាប្រភេទទទួលរងការគម្រាមកំហែង និងជិតផុតពូជលើពិភពលោក នៅតំបន់រ៉ាមសារព្រែកទាល់ ដែលជាតំបន់ស្នូល នៃឋបនីយជីវមណ្ឌលបឹងទន្លេសាប (Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve) ដោយចុះ អប់រំផ្សព្វផ្សាយដល់សហគមន៍មូលដ្ឋាន សិក្សាស្រាវជ្រាវរកទីតាំងបន្ទាយពងកូនសត្វស្លាប បណ្តុះបណ្តាលដល់មន្ត្រីឧទ្យានុរក្ស ស្តីអំពីវិធីសាស្រ្តធ្វើអត្តសញ្ញាណនិងប្រមូលទិន្នន័យចុះពិនិត្យស្ថានភាពមកដល់ និងបន្តពូជពងកូនសត្វស្លាប និងការប្រមូលទិន្នន័យ កំណត់ព្រំប្រទល់បន្ទាយពងកូនសត្វស្លាប និងកំណត់ទីតាំងយាមប្រចាំការការពារ រៀបចំផែនការប្រចាំខែ សំរាប់ មន្ត្រីឧទ្យានុរក្សចុះយាមល្បាតការពារបន្ទាយពងកូនសត្វស្លាប។
ខ្ញុំពិតជារីករាយណាស់ជាមួយនឹងសមិទ្ធិផលរបស់ខ្ញុំដែលកំពុងធ្វើក្នុងការងារអភិរក្សសត្វបក្សី ពីព្រោះការងារនេះអាចជួយការពារសត្វព្រៃក្នុងប្រទេសរបស់ខ្ញុំបាន ជាពិសេសប្រភេទសត្វស្លាបដែលជិតផុតពូជជាសាកល សត្វស្លាបដែលកំពុងរងការគំរាមកំហែងនិងប្រភេទសត្វស្លាបដែលជិតត្រូវបានគំរាមកំហែង។ ខ្ញុំពិតជាមានមោទនភាពចំពោះការងារខ្ញុំណាស់ ព្រោះធនធានសត្វព្រៃទាំងនោះពិតជាមានសារៈសំខាន់សម្រាប់សហគមន៍មូលដ្ឋានដែលពឹងអាស្រ័យលើធនធានទាំងនោះសម្រាប់ជីវភាពរស់នៅប្រចាំថ្ងៃរបស់ពួកគាត់ ដោយពួកគាត់អាចទទួលបានប្រាក់ចំណូលបន្ថែមពីសេវាកម្ម អេកូទេសចរណ៍ដូចជា ការផ្ដល់សេវាទូកទេសចរណ៍ សេវាមគ្គុទេស ផ្ទះស្នាក់ អាហារដ្ឋានសហគមន៍ និងការលក់វត្ថុអនុស្សាវរីយ៍។ ខ្ញុំពិតជារីករាយណាស់ដែលបានឃើញការប្រើប្រាស់ធនធានធម្មជាតិប្រកបដោយនិរន្តរភាពពីសំណាក់សហគមន៍មូលដ្ឋាន ហើយពួកគាត់រីករាយក្នុងការចូលរួមការពារធនធានទាំងអស់នោះផងដែរ។ ដើម្បីទទួលបានជោគជ័យក្នុងការងារអភិរក្សយើងត្រូវការសហគមន៍មូលដ្ឋានទាំងអស់ដែលរស់នៅជុំវិញតំបន់អភិរក្សនិងអ្នកពាក់ព័ន្ធទាំងអស់អោយចូលរួមជាមួយយើងក្នុងការការពារតំបន់នេះ តាមរយៈសកម្មភាពប្រចាំថ្ងៃនិងរបៀបរបបរស់នៅរបស់ពួកគាត់។ ខ្ញុំសង្ឃឹមថានឹងបង្រៀនកូនប្រុសរបស់ខ្ញុំឱ្យស្រឡាញ់បក្សីនិងធ្វើឲ្យការមើលបក្សីជាចំណង់ចំណូលចិត្តរបស់គាត់ ហើយថែមទាំងថែរក្សាធនធានធម្មជាតិឲ្យបានល្អ។
លោក ស៊ុន វិសាល គឺគឺជាបុគ្គលឆ្នើម ប្រចាំឆ្នាំ២០១៨ -២០១៩ ក្នុងការអភិរក្សតំបន់ទន្លេមេគង្គដែលបានជ្រើសរើសដោយ គម្រោងអច្ឆរិយភាពនៃទន្លេមេគង្គ។ រូបភាពទាំងអស់ផ្ដល់ដោយលោក ស៊ុន វិសាល។
