Hong Chamnan is a Project Manager with the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Department of Freshwater Wetlands Conservation under the Cambodian Ministry of the Environment
I currently work towards the conservation of endangered and vulnerable birds such as the Saurus Crane and Bengal Florican. This conservation focuses on education and outreach to key groups, such as community members, as well as relevant institutions to help them understand the importance of rare and endangered birds. We have to make sure that communities take part in protecting bird species so they can survive for a long time. I’m so happy and proud of my work once communities understand and become involved in our conservation efforts.
As part of my job, I manage staff to monitor bird species, crack down on crime such as land grabbing or illegal hunting, facilitate ecotourism in communities, and guard the nests of Bengal Floricans. This work is very important to me because I can help my society by educating and explaining to villagers how they can be involved in the protection of rare and endangered bird species. I also encourage them to take part in protecting the forest and grass fields, which are the most important habitats for wildlife. By doing this, villagers gain a lot of benefits from conservation through livelihood activities such as ecotourism, extracting non-timber forest products, and raising livestock. My favorite part of my job is helping communities develop ecotourism.
Nature is the main motivation and encouragement for me to do conservation work because I like wildlife, and I’m very proud when I see the abundance of wildlife species has increased and is protected by villagers. To me, “conservation” refers to protection and ensuring that there’s no extinction of protected species. Conservationists have to think about the biology of the species, including breeding, food, safe refuge, and good habitats. In order to encourage people to support conservation, I have to show them that participating in conservation is very important for our society, and it can also improve their livelihoods to change from a wildlife hunter to a conservationist. My hope for the future is that people will understand about conservation activities and become more involved. I also hope that the abundance of wildlife will increase, that the number of tourists will increase, and more villagers will have jobs from ecotourism.
ជីវប្រវត្តិរបស់លោក ហុង ចំណាន
បច្ចុប្បន្នខ្ញុំកំពុងតែធ្វើការពាក់ព័ន្ធទៅនឹងការអភិរក្សសត្វស្លាបដែលងាយរងគ្រោះ និងជិតផុតពូជបំផុតនៅលើពិភពលោកមានដូចជាសត្វក្រៀល និងសត្វខ្សឹបជាដើម។ ការអភិរក្សដែលខ្ញុំកំពុងធ្វើនោះផ្តោតទៅលើការអប់រំផ្សព្វផ្សាយដល់អ្នកសំខាន់ៗមានដូចជា សមាជិកសហគមន៍ និងស្ថាប័នពាក់ព័ន្ធនានាធ្វើយ៉ាងណាឲ្យពួកគាត់យល់ដឹងអំពីសារសំខាន់នៃសត្វស្លាបកម្រ ងាយរងគ្រោះ និងជិតផុតពូជបំផុត។ ជាមួយគ្នានេះដែរ យើងបានជម្រុញ និងលើកទឹកចិត្តដល់សហគមន៍ឲ្យចូលរួមចំណែកក្នុងការការពារប្រភេទសត្វស្លាបដែលកម្រ ហើយយើងជឿជាក់ថាសត្វស្លាបទាំងនោះនឹងអាចរួចផុតជីវិត ហើយរស់រានបានយូរអង្វែង។ ខ្ញុំពិតជារីករាយ និងមានមោទនភាពចំពោះការងារនេះខ្លាំងណាស់ព្រោះសហគមន៍បានយល់ដឹង ហើយពួកគាត់ចូលរួមយ៉ាងសកម្មក្នុងការងារអភិរក្ស។
ការងារខ្ញុំមួយផ្នែកទៀតគឺ ដឹកនាំក្រុមការងារដើម្បីត្រួតពិនិត្យ និងអង្កេតតាមដានប្រភេទសត្វស្លាប ជាពិសេសតាមដាន និងទប់ស្កាត់លើការជួញដូរសត្វព្រៃខុសច្បាប់ ការទន្ទ្រានដីធ្លីសម្រាប់ធ្វើជាកម្មសិទ្ធិ សម្របសម្រួលលើសេវាកម្មទេសចរណ៍ធម្មជាតិជាមួយសហគមន៍មូលដ្ឋាន និងកម្មវិធីការពារសំបុកពងកូនរបស់សត្វខ្សឹបជាដើម។ ការងារនេះពិតជាមានសារសំខាន់ណាស់ ព្រោះខ្ញុំអាចជួយប្រទេសរបស់ខ្ញុំតាមរយៈការអប់រំណែនាំប្រជាជនមូលដ្ឋានពីរបៀប ដែលពួកគាត់អាចចូលរួមក្នុងសកម្មភាពអភិរក្សប្រភទសត្វកម្រ ងាយរងគ្រោះ និងជិតផុតពូជបំផុតនៅលើពិភពលោក។ ជាមួយគ្នានេះផងដែរ ខ្ញុំក៏បានលើកទឹកចិត្តនិងជម្រុញឲ្យពួកគាត់ចូលរួមការការពារព្រៃឈើ និងវាលស្មៅដែលជាកន្លែងដ៏មានសារៈសំខាន់សម្រាប់ទីជម្រកសត្វព្រៃគ្រប់ប្រភេទ។ម៉្យាងវិញទៀតសហគមន៍មូលដ្ឋានក៏បានទទួលនូវអត្ថប្រយោជន៍ជាច្រើនតាមរយៈការបង្កើនកម្រិតជីវភាពរស់នៅរបស់ពួកគាត់មានដូចជា សេវាកម្មទេសចរណ៍ធម្មជាតិផលិតកម្មស្រូវប្រកបដោយនិរន្តរភាពជាដើម។ ការងារដែលខ្ញុំចូលចិត្តជាងគេនោះគឺការជួយគាំទ្រដល់សហគមន៍មូលដ្ឋានក្នុងវិស័យទេសចរណ៍ធម្មជាតិ។
ធម្មជាតិពិតជាជួយ ជម្រុញ និងលើកទឹកចិត្តដ៏ចម្បងសម្រាប់ខ្ញុំក្នុងការងារអភិរក្ស សត្វព្រៃព្រោះខ្ញុំចូលចិត្តសត្វព្រៃ ហើយខ្ញុំពិតជាមានមោទនភាពណាស់ពេលដែលខ្ញុំឃើញចំនួនប្រភេទសត្វដែលងាយរងគ្រោះ និងជិតផុតពូជបំផុតមានការកើនឡើង ហើយប្រជាជនចូលរួមការងារពួកវា។ ចំពោះខ្ញុំ ការអភិរក្ស គឺសំដៅទៅលើការការពារ និងធានាថា សត្វដែលយើងការពារនឹងមិនដាច់ពូជឡើយ។ អ្នកអភិរក្សត្រូវតែគិតអំពីជីវសាស្រ្តរបស់ប្រភេទសត្វព្រៃ មានដូចជាការបន្តពូជ ចំណីអាហារ ការផ្លាស់ទីជម្រកសុវត្តិភាព និងកន្លែងរស់នៅរបស់ពួកវា ដើម្បីជម្រុញនិងលើកទឹកចិត្តឲ្យប្រជាជនមូលដ្ឋានចូលរួមគាំទ្រការងារអភិរក្ស គឺខ្ញុំត្រូវបង្ហាញពួកគាត់ ឲ្យឃើញយ៉ាងច្បាស់លាស់ថា ការចូលរួមក្នុងការអភិរក្សពិតជាមានសារៈសំខាន់ណាស់សម្រាប់សង្គមជាតិរបស់យើង ហើយពួកគាត់អាចលើកកម្ពស់ជីវភាពរស់ ដោយប្តូរពីអ្នកបរបាញ់សត្វ ទៅជាអ្នកការពារសត្វវិញ។ ក្តីសង្ឈឹមរបស់ខ្ញុំនៅពេលអនាគតគឺប្រជាជនបានយល់ច្បាស់អំពីសកម្មភាពអភិរក្ស ហើយពួកគាត់ស្ម័គ្រចិត្តចូលរួមក្នុងសកម្មភាពអភិរក្ស។ខ្ញុំក៏សង្ឈឹមផងដែរថា ចំនួនសត្វស្លាបដែលងាយរងគ្រោះ និងជិតផុតពូជបំផុតនៅលើពិភពលោក ចំនួនភ្ញៀវទេសចរណ៍មកទស្សនាសត្វស្លាបនឹងមានកើនឡើង ហើយប្រជាជនមូលដ្ឋាននឹងអាចទទួលបានការងារច្រើនព្រមទាំងបង្កើនកម្រិតជីវភាពរស់នៅបានល្អប្រសើរជាងមុនតាមរយៈសេវាកម្មទេសចរណ៍ធម្មជាតិ។
