Sun Visal is a Senior Project Officer with the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Department of Freshwater Wetlands Conservation under the Cambodian Ministry of the Environment
When I was young and living in my hometown, there were a lot of forests and wildlife, especially water birds. I have loved these natural resources since I was very young. When I grew up, these resources and species decreased, and some no longer exist near my village like in the past. That’s why I’m interested in conservation work. I currently work for the Department of Freshwater Wetlands under the Ministry of Environment, and also work for the Wildlife Conservation Society at Tonle Sap lake. I’m responsible for monitoring wildlife, especially vulnerable and endangered water birds at the Ramsar Site at Prek Toal of Tonle Sap Lake. My tasks are to search for their nests and breeding areas, provide training to other officers in how to identify birds and collect data, check the birds’ arrivals and reproduction, identify areas to protect, and make monthly plans for local officers to guard the nests from poachers.
My work is important to me because it contributes to protecting wildlife that are very important globally. It’s a skill that I’ve loved from a very young age since I’ve seen the decrease in these species. I’m motivated in my work by my love for water birds, and monitoring them is my favorite part of my job. It offers me a chance to study and review the development of the birds and their reproduction. These are vulnerable and endangered bird species, and I can share my experiences with local officers and other interested people. My work also gives me the opportunity to learn about conservation from experiences at the international level.
To me, “conservation” refers to protection so something lasts forever for the next generation. I hope to encourage others to support conservation by being a role model, doing education and outreach about the importance of conservation, promoting more conservation work, finding benefits of conservation for communities, and showing them its positive impacts. My hope for the future is that natural resources and important water birds are well protected, and their numbers increase all over Cambodia. I also wish that all Cambodians could better understand conservation efforts and become involved in the protection and conservation of the natural resources in our country.

កាលនៅក្មេងៗនៅស្រុកកំណើតរបស់ខ្ញុំ សំបូរធនធានព្រៃឈើ និងសត្វព្រៃច្រើន ជាពិសេសសត្វស្លាបទឹក ហើយទាំងអស់នោះជាធនធាន ដែលខ្ញុំតែងតែស្រលាញ់ចូលចិត្តតាំងពីកាលនៅក្មេង លុះដល់ធំដឹងក្តីឡើងធនធានទាំងនោះត្រូវបានថយចុះ ហើយមួយចំនួនទៀតមិនមានវត្តមាននៅស្រុកកំណើតរបស់ខ្ញុំដូចមុនទៀតឡើយ ទាំងនេះដែលជាហេតុធ្វើអោយខ្ញុំ មានការចាប់អារម្មណ៍ខ្លាំងលើការងារអភិរក្ស។ បច្ចុប្បន្នខ្ញុំកំពុងធ្វើការនៅនាយកដ្ឋានអភិរក្សតំបន់ដីសើមទឹកសាប នៃអគ្គនាយកដ្ឋានរដ្ឋបាល ការពារ និងអភិរក្សធម្មជាតិ ក្រសួងបរិស្ថាន និងធ្វើការជាមួយអង្គការសមាគមអភិរក្សសត្វព្រៃផងដែរ។បច្ចុប្បន្នខ្ញុំបានធ្វើការដោយផ្ទាល់លើ កម្មវិធីអង្កេតនិងពិនិត្យតាមដានសត្វព្រៃ ជាពិសេសសត្វសា្លបទឹកសំខាន់ៗ ដែលជាប្រភេទទទួលរងការគំរាមកំហែង និងជិតផុតពូជលើពិភពលោក នៅតំបន់រ៉ាមសារព្រែកទាល់ ដែលជាតំបន់ស្នូលនៃឋបនីយជីវមណ្ឌលបឹងទន្លេសាប ដោយចុះសិក្សាស្រាវជ្រាវរកទីតាំងបន្ទាយពងកូនសត្វស្លាប បណ្តុះបណ្តាលដល់មន្ត្រីឧទ្យានុរក្សស្តីអំពី វិធីសាស្រ្តធ្វើអត្តសញ្ញាណ និងប្រមូលទិន្នន័យ ចុះពិនិត្យស្ថានភាពមកដល់ និងបន្តពូជពងកូនសត្វស្លាប និងការប្រមូលទិន្នន័យ កំណត់ព្រំប្រទល់បន្ទាយពងកូនសត្វស្លាប និងកំណត់ទីតាំងយាមប្រចាំការការពារ រៀបចំផែនការប្រចាំខែសំរាប់មន្ត្រីឧទ្យានុរក្សចុះយាមល្បាត ការពារបន្ទាយពងកូនសត្វស្លាប ពីការរំខាននិងលូចប្រមូលពងកូន។
ការងារនេះមានសារៈសំខាន់សំរាប់ខ្ញុំ ព្រោះវាបានជួយរួមចំណែកការពារធនធាន ដែលជាប្រភេទមានសារៈសំខាន់ជាអន្តរជាតិ ហើយជាការងារជំនាញដែលខ្ញុំស្រលាញ់ចូលចិត្តតាំងពីក្មេង បន្ទាប់ពីបានឃើញធនធាននេះថយចុះ។ កម្មវិធីអង្កេត និងពិនិត្យតាមដានសត្វស្លាបទឹក គឺជាកម្មវិធីដែលខ្ញុំចូលចិត្តជាងគេ ហើយដែលអាចផ្តល់ឱកាសអោយខ្ញុំ បានចុះសិក្សាស្រាវជ្រាវ ពិនិត្យតាមដានពីដំណើវិវត្ត នៃការបន្តពូជពងកូនប្រភេទសត្វស្លាបទឹកសំខាន់ៗ ដែលជាប្រភេទទទួលរងការគំរាមកំហែង និងជិតផុតពូជលើពិភពលោកទាំងនោះ និងអាចចែករំលែកបទពិសោធន៍ និងចំណេះដឹង ដល់មន្ត្រីឧទ្យានុរក្ស អ្នកដែលមានចំណាប់អារម្មណ៍ និងអ្នកពាក់ព័ន្ធផ្សេងៗទៀត។ តាមរយៈការងារដែលខ្ញុំបាន និងកំពុងធ្វើបច្ចុប្បន្ននេះ បានផ្តល់ឱកាសឱ្យខ្ញុំទទួលបាននូវ មេរៀន និងបទពិសោធន៍ថ្មីៗថែមទៀតក្នុងកំរិតអន្តរជាតិ។
សម្រាប់ខ្ញុំ “ ការអភិរក្ស ” គឺសំដៅលើ ការថែរក្សា និងការពារ អោយនៅគង់វង្សយូរអង្វែងសំរាប់អ្នកជំនាន់ក្រោយ។ ខ្ញុំនឹងលើកទឹកចិត្តដល់អ្នកផ្សេងទៀតគាំទ្រដល់ ការងារអភិរក្ស តាមរយៈការធ្វើជាគំរូដល់អ្នកទាំងនេះ អប់រំផ្សព្វផ្សាយពីអត្ថប្រយោជន៍ស្តីពីការអភិរក្ស បង្កើនសកម្មភាពអភិរក្សបន្តែមទៀត ស្វែងរកផលប្រយោជន៍ពីកិច្ចការងារអភិរក្សដល់សហគមន៍ និងបង្ហាញពីផលវិជ្ជមានដែលទទួលបានពីការអភិរក្ស។ នៅថ្ងៃអនាគតខ្ញុំរំពឹងថា ធនធានធម្មជាតិ និងប្រភេទសំខាន់ៗដែលជាប្រភេទទទួលរងនូវការគំរាមកំហែង និងជិតផុតពូជលើពិភពលោក នឹងត្រូវបានការពារ និងថែរក្សាបានល្អ ហើយចំនួនរបស់វានឹងកើនឡើងវិញ និងមានវត្តមានគ្រប់ទីកន្លែងក្នុងប្រទេសកម្ពុជា។ ខ្ញុំក៏សង្ឃឹមយ៉ាងមុតមាំផងដែរថាប្រជាជនខ្មែរយើងនឹងមានការយល់ដឹងបានទូលំទូលាយអំពី ការងារអភិរក្ស និងចូលរួមការពារ និងអភិរក្សធនធានធម្មជាតិដែលមានក្នុងប្រទេសយើងនេះ។
