Thach Phanara is the Head of the Laboratory Division at the Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute under the Cambodian Fisheries Administration
I have spent my career studying the fish of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, and working for conservation and outreach related to endangered fish species. My expertise is in research and identification of freshwater fish species in Cambodia. I first started studying animal health and fish diseases, and also conducted research on species at the fishing lots in Kampong Cham province. I worked on the Mekong Fish Conservation Project from 1999–2013, in which I worked with fishermen to tag and release endangered fish species.
I am currently the head of the Laboratory Division at the Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute with the Fisheries Administration, where I am in charge of analytical and experimental research and reporting. My daily work includes monitoring and identifying aquatic animals, including endangered species, and research and monitoring of juvenile fish species, including fish larval drift from the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. My favorite parts of my work are doing research and working to conserve biodiversity.
To me, conservation means preserving the balance of nature, preserving nature to be the same as in the past, and preserving it in a sustainable way. I encourage others to take part in conservation by raising awareness and explaining to the communities about the value of fish conservation, showing them the results of protection and conservation, and offering them some incentives or gifts for actions like releasing endangered fish species. My hope for the future is that fishermen, fishing communities, and the whole world, not only Cambodians, will understand about the importance of conservation for themselves, their communities, and their countries. I hope that they will get involved with our work after they have learned to understand the importance of conservation.

ខ្ញុំបានចំណាយពេលសិក្សាអំពីត្រីនៅក្នុងទន្លេមេគង្គ និងទន្លេសាប ហើយធ្វើការដើម្បីអភិរក្ស និងផ្សព្វផ្សាយ ទាក់ទងនឹងប្រភេទត្រីដែលរងគ្រោះជិតផុតពូជ។ ជំនាញរបស់ខ្ញុំ គឺការស្រាវជ្រាវ និងកំណត់អត្តសញ្ញាណកម្មប្រភេទត្រីទឹកសាបនៅកម្ពុជា។ ដំបូង ខ្ញុំបានចាប់ផ្តើមសិក្សាពីសុខភាពសត្វ និងជំងឺរបស់ត្រី ហើយបានធ្វើការស្រាវជ្រាវអំពីប្រភេទត្រីនៅតាមតំបន់ឡូតិ៍នេសាទនៅក្នុងខេត្តកំពង់ចាម។ ខ្ញុំបានធ្វើការលើគម្រោងអភិរក្សត្រីមេគង្គ ពីឆ្នាំ ១៩៩៩ ដល់ឆ្នាំ ២០១៣ ដែលខ្ញុំបានធ្វើការជាមួយអ្នកនេសាទដោយផ្ទាល់ ដើម្បីបំពាក់ស្លាកសញ្ញាសម្គាល់ និងដោះលែងប្រភេទត្រីដែលរងគ្រោះជិតផុតពូជ។
បច្ចុប្បន្ននេះ ខ្ញុំជាប្រធានផ្នែកមន្ទីរពិសោធន៍ នៅវិទ្យាស្ថានស្រាវជ្រាវ និងអភិវឌ្ឍន៍ជលផលទឹកសាប ជាមួយរដ្ឋបាលជលផល ទីដែលខ្ញុំទទួលបន្ទុកខាងវិភាគ និងពិសោធន៍ ស្រាវជ្រាវ និងធ្វើរបាយការណ៍។ ការងារប្រចាំថ្ងៃរបស់ខ្ញុំរួមមាន ការត្រួតពិនិត្យ និងកំណត់អត្តសញ្ញាណកម្មប្រភេទសត្វរស់ក្នុងទឹក រាប់បញ្ចូលទាំងប្រភេទដែលរងគ្រោះជិតផុតពូជផងដែរ ធ្វើការស្រាវជ្រាវ និងតាមដានប្រភេទត្រីមិនទាន់ពេញវ័យ រួមទាំងកូនត្រីផងដែរ ដែលមកពីទន្លេមេគង្គ និងទន្លេទន្លេសាប។ ផ្នែកដែលខ្ញុំចូលចិត្តបំផុតនៃការងាររបស់ខ្ញុំ គឺធ្វើការស្រាវជ្រាវ និងការអភិរក្សជីវចម្រុះ។
ចំពោះខ្ញុំ ការអភិរក្សមានន័យថា ការថែរក្សាតុល្យភាពនៃធម្មជាតិ ការថែរក្សាធម្មជាតិឱ្យដូចទៅនឹងកាលពីអតីតកាល និងថែរក្សាវាឱ្យមាននិរន្តរភាព។ ខ្ញុំលើកទឹកចិត្តអ្នកដទៃឱ្យចូលរួមក្នុងការអភិរក្ស ដោយលើកកម្ពស់ការយល់ដឹង និងពន្យល់ដល់សហគមន៍ អំពីតម្លៃនៃការអភិរក្សមច្ឆជាតិ ដោយបង្ហាញពីលទ្ធផលនៃការការពារ និងការអភិរក្ស និងផ្តល់ឱ្យពួកគេនូវការលើកទឹកចិត្ត ឬអំណោយណាមួយ សម្រាប់សកម្មភាពដូចជាការលែងប្រភេទត្រីដែលរងគ្រោះជិតផុតពូជចូលក្នុងធម្មជាតិវិញជាដើម។ ក្តីសង្ឃឹមរបស់ខ្ញុំនាពេលអនាគត គឺប្រជានេសាទ សហគមន៍នេសាទ និងពិភពលោកទាំងមូល មិនត្រឹមតែប្រជាជនកម្ពុជាទេ ពួកគេនឹងយល់ដឹងអំពីសារៈសំខាន់នៃការអភិរក្សសម្រាប់ខ្លួនឯង សម្រាប់សហគមន៍ និងសម្រាប់ប្រទេសរបស់ពួកគេផងដែរ។ ខ្ញុំសង្ឃឹមថា ពួកគេនឹងចូលរួមជាមួយការងាររបស់យើង បន្ទាប់ពីពួកគេបានយល់ដឹងពីសារៈសំខាន់នៃការអភិរក្ស។
