At about 8am, the sun shines down on the Nam Houng, the main river that threads its way through the provincial capital of Xayaboury. As the mist slowly evaporates, the voices of young people can be heard as they gather by the water to catch fish.
A line of boys and girls make their way along a narrow path down to the river, carrying fishing utensils and bamboo containers that are tied to their waists.
