Military police, forestry administration officers and Wildlife Alliance officials on Wednesday raided a house in Pursat province used to facilitate the illegal wildlife trade, seizing nearly 80 kilos of snakes.
A Wildlife Alliance official, who asked not to be named because he was not allowed to speak the media, said the owner was fined and the wildlife was seized to be released back into the wild.
“We seized all the wildlife and according to forestry administration law, the owner must pay a fine,” he said. “We fined the owner three times the total price of the wildlife, equivalent to about $2,750.”
“Our network reported the house to us. We have a mobile interventionist team which is comprised of the national Military Police, the forestry administration and our organisation,” he added.
The officer said the wildlife seized were three types of non-venomous snakes, totalling 78.5 kilograms. All of them were then released into the wild.
