Freshwater protected areas

Freshwater protected areas restrict human activities, such as fishing, in specific locations to conserve key aquatic habitats and species. These “no fishing” or “limited fishing” zones can be found in a variety of habitats throughout the Mekong Basin, and often involve active community participation as a form of local-level sustainable resource management. Much can be learned by exchanging experiences among conservation practitioners, and investigating what makes freshwater protected areas most effective.
